God didn’t answer my prayer … or did he?

At the beginning of lockdown, in March 2020, I prayed that God would stand between us and the corona virus. I had the dramatic, biblical scene from Numbers 16.41-50 in mind. I was disappointed, it didn’t work out like I expected. No cinematic mega intervention. Six months later, and here we are, alive and well.

That”s not to deny that many have lost loved ones; that ‘nature’ has run its course. On the positive side, we have seen the community pull together to see people fed, comforted, supplied with essentials, entertained and enabled to work.

Pondering all of this, I was reminded of another passage in the bible:

“The Lord will keep you from every disease. He will not inflict on you the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but he will inflict them on all those who hate you.” Deuteronomy 7.15

In context, the promise is made to the Israelites as they contemplated entering the promised land. God saved the Israelites and the surrounding nations took note. The verse still seems pertinent for us today as we start a new academic year. God asks us to trust him.
